When visiting Mexico, and spending an amazing vacation in its extraordinary historical sites, moving around the cities can be fairly comfortable via public transportation. But for visiting crowded sites, or those that are far from the city, it’s better to rent a car so you can go early in the morning and avoid the crowded tour guides, buses full of people, and the hot sun during the day.

Driving in Riviera Maya is not a complicated thing, it just needs a little more attention to avoid things we don’t usually see in the States or Canada; people riding bikes and scooters or walking with farm animals, speed bumps called “TOPES”, and often lots of one-way streets.

First, let’s go over the car rental requirements in Mexico:

•    A valid driver’s license from your home country in Latin characters; if it isn’t written in Latin characters (for example, Japanese or Russian), you will need to get an International Driver’s License. And if your driver’s license has no photo of you, you’ll need to bring a photo ID with you, too.

•    Drivers in Mexico are usually required to be at least 25 years old.

•    It is essential (required by law) to buy Mexican Personal Liability Insurance (PLI). Other kinds of insurance, like personal accident, supplemental liability, etc. are not mandatory, but are still recommended. This includes the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), which is probably offered by your credit card company for free if you pay for the rented car with the card.
